HORIZON 2020 | Sensor TEchnology for Food analYsis

The European Commission, with the Horizon 2020 program, funds high-potential innovation through a dedicated SME instrument, which helps high-potential SMEs to develop groundbreaking innovative ideas for products, services or processes that are ready to face global market competition.

Horizon 2020 actively supports SMEs by providing both direct financial support, and indirect support to increase their innovation capacity. 'Innovation in SMEs' aims at creating a bridge between the core of the framework programme - support to research, development and innovation projects - and the creation of a favourable ecosystem for SME innovation and growth.

Enologica Vason S.p.A., Proxentia s.r.l. and Odl s.r.l., thanks to the approval and to the incentives of Horizon 2020 program, are developing in partnership a new efficient, convenient and innovative portable instrument for food safety:

Sensor TEchnology for Food analYsis – STEFY

The aim of STEFY project is to facilitate SMEs and large companies in the food safety testing with a new portable device, particularly effective and economically convenient, able to find out possible toxins and/or allergens inside wine, flour and cereals.

STEFY device main innovation lies on the ability to quickly determine and simultaneously quantify the presence/absence of dozens of molecules for on-site applications. This is due to the newly developed cartridges: a glass substrate, with high advanced Reflective Phantom Interface, combined with functionalized nanoparticles for an optimal signal amplification, with very competitive results.

The key competitive features of the STEFY device are:

  1.       Reduced test duration;
  2.       Simultaneous broad-spectrum monitoring;
  3.       On-site applicability;
  4.       Versatility;
  5.       Low cost.

The outcomes of the STEFY project will:

a) Facilitate opportune procedures for prevention and/or damage containment of the food;

b) Reduce risks related to the introduction of potentially dangerous material;

c) Reduce the use of laboratories to only the most relevant cases;

d) Reduce the costs while improving quality (lower level of residuals on the product and a reduced environmental impact).

The aim of this project is to launch this device with personalized cartridges on the European market, for a fast, reliable and affordable food safety evaluation.
